Our Rotary
volunteers put in a lot of time to make this event a success and it is
so gratifying to see families enjoying themselves at beautiful Tempe
Town Lake. In Rotary we have a set of rules that we try to govern our
lives with called the 4 WAY TEST. 1. Is it the
Truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build
goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all
concerned? We hold all of our racers to the same test and every
year they pass with flying colors. This event has so many wonderful
benefits for kids. They learn team work building their boats and they
develop creative problem solving by meeting the challenge of making the
most from the least go the furthest. It is educational and fun to boot.
This
year's Regatta was the best yet! We had a great sunny day. Terry got
sunburn but enjoyed calling the races and did a great job of it. We had
90 boats... that is about 1/3 more than last year and people really
seemed to have fun. We had greater participation from schools,
elementary, high school, science clubs, community colleges and the
university. Things are looking good for the Tempe Rotary River Rally...
Next years race is April 17. Hope to see some "out of staters" there.

Here are some comments received after the Tempe Regatta!

This was our first year attending the Rotary River Rally. Although
we didn't do too well, we are anxious to enter next year's race.
We should do much better. All of my students had a great time
sinking into the lake!
Wayne T. Welander
Instructor - ADDA Certified Drafter
ITT Technical Institute - Phoenix 053

This is Adrianne Moreno, teacher from the Cesar Chavez Science
Club. We had a wonderful time, we had a lot of parents and
teachers come out, even school board member/state legislator Ben
Miranda came out to help and cheer us on. Since this was the first
time the students had seen the competition they didn't know what
to expect, so this was a learning experience. Even though none of
our entries finished, it was a "teachable moment”, after they sank
they would come and tell me what went wrong and what they want to
change. On our way home they were already wanting to start in the
summer, to build for next year. Thank You for giving me a project
that was all inclusive, it brought together, all types of
students, boys, girls, special needs, limited English speakers,
they all came together and help each other out.
Goal for next year is to work on our rowing, but all in all not
bad for a group of students who had never been on a boat before.
Adrianne Moreno,
Sponsor of the Cesar Chavez Science Club

We had a great time, it was our first time ever for the three of
us to even see a cardboard boat race and to come in 4th place
overall... we were astonished. Can't wait for next year... Ideas
buzzing in our heads... thanks for a wonderful time...
Thank you,
Don Trible (the
Lewis and Clark boat)

You can plan on seeing a Zoo boat next year - we just had way too
much fun! We actually thought about displaying our boat to
visitors here, but then we knew kids would be climbing all over it
and we didn't need that! Plus we only finished it two days before.
But, yes, I think there are some things we could do to promote the
event. Maybe even host a boat building Saturday or something. We
could promote it in our membership publication. Have your experts
come out and host a clinic here for our members that might want to
get involved. I look forward to receiving next year's regatta info
and thanks for all your help.
Betsy Seibert

and another Zoo comment...
Thanks for the results! All of us from the Phoenix Zoo were so
excited when we heard that we had won the People's Choice
Award!!!!!!! This was a fun event to be a part of. Our team really
enjoyed the whole process! There were many parts to our team -
some helped design it, some helped to build it and paint it, some
rowed, and some were there the day of the event to support and
cheer the rowing crew on! It was definitely a big team effort! We
are already talking about what we want to do for next year's race!
We want to win! Not to mention we've got the People's Choice Award
title to defend! We learned a lot, so we'll be back next year...
better then ever! This event was wonderful. You all have done such
a great job... and it seems to be growing! What a great event for
everyone - families, kids, adults, friends, co-workers... everyone
had a blast! Hopefully it will be back at the Tempe Town Lake - it
was a great location... great for spectators too! Thanks for such
a great event and opportunity to participate. Count us in for next
year... we would be happy to work with you and promote the event
to all of our visitors and members.
Jennifer
Montoya, Phoenix Zoo

On behalf of the entire Riff Raft IV team, I just wanted to say
thanks to you and all the Rotary Club members for putting on a
really great event! I think everyone who attended had a great
time, and the event showcased the Town Lake development nicely.
Despite having nearly twice as many boats, we all thought that the
event was run very smoothly and efficiently. We were expecting
quite a long day, but I think we finished earlier this year than
last year!
Thanks for all your hard work! I think we will retire at the top,
but might be interested in helping out next year. Also, don't
forget about our idea for a Cardboard Boat Demolition Derby - I
think that could be a really fun new event!
Sincerely,
Cap'n Lattig

and finally... from District
5510's Governor Elect...
Dear River Rally Organizers,
I just wanted to write all of you a short note to express my
sincere appreciation for all of your efforts in organizing one of
the best Rotary events in the State of Arizona. The River Rally
was extremely well organized and a tremendous event.
Good luck to all of you.
With Best Regards,
Greg Podd, DGE Rotary District 5510
